Admissions Q&A: Associate Director Jackie Brockmyre

Associate Director of Graduate Admissions Jackie Brockmyre provides admissions tips and graduate program highlights.

What is the one aspect of Carroll School Graduate Programs you’d like to highlight?

Our world-renowned faculty! Many of the faculty at the Carroll School of Management come from industry experience and bring that insight and perspective to the classroom. They’re basically the life force of our programs, whether in our MBA, specialty master’s, or PhD programs.

Is the Carroll School Graduate Admissions Office offering any events this fall?

Keeping in mind the safety of the BC community, on-campus admission visits are currently suspended. So, in lieu of campus visits, we’re offering virtual opportunities for applicants to meet admissions staff and current students, including coffee chats and info sessions.

If you do not see an event on our website that works with your schedule, you can reach out to us directly to be connected with someone from our graduate community. Speaking to students and alumni is the best way to compare programs and determine the best fit for you.

What does the application review and notification process look like?

Overall, an application goes through several review rounds by readers and admissions staff before culminating in a committee review. You can find out when to expect a decision by viewing the decision notification dates on our website at bc.edu/admission.

What is the Admissions Committee looking for as it reads applicants’ essays?

The essay is an opportunity for the Admissions Committee to get to know you. As you write the essay, my advice is to answer the essay prompts specifically with Boston College in mind (a common mistake we see is applicants submitting the same essay to multiple schools).

We want to hear why you are applying to the Carroll School of Management and how a graduate management degree from BC will help you achieve your career goals.

For more insights on how to prepare a solid application essay, I encourage you to read our blog posts on answering the essay questions, as well as additional tips to keep in mind when writing your essay.

Any final words about the admissions process?

At BC, we value our collaborative community and industry-focused curricula. Our class sizes are relatively small by design to foster relationships and connections, which eventually translate into a close-knit and accessible alumni network—something I feel is as important today as ever.

Overall, we take a personalized approach to our admissions process. Our goal is to personally work with you as an applicant to determine your fit for our graduate programs and to set you up for application success.
